The sensitivity of the West African monsoon circulation to intraseasonal soil moisture feedbacks

نویسندگان

چکیده

Intraseasonal soil moisture variability has the potential to feed back onto West Africa monsoon circulation through its influence on surface turbulent fluxes and planetary boundary-layer characteristics. Using satellite observations an atmospheric reanalysis, we investigate intraseasonal moisture–atmosphere feedbacks triggered by large-scale dynamics within African monsoon. Surprisingly, even though response across Sahel strong convection is short-lived (days) precipitation accumulations are spatially temporally heterogeneous, a coherent regional-scale observed. This then feeds circulation. For example, during dry event, Sahelian significantly decreases, which elevates temperatures 1.5 °C shifts southward approximately 1.5° latitude. Also, wet event moistens cools leads northward shift. Alongside low-level wind response, Easterly Jet (AEJ) also responds changes due variations in meridional temperature gradient. increased gradient intensifies AEJ southward. The combined of westerlies impacts shear characteristics convection. Elevated promotes intensification deep southern Africa. study provides new insight into sensitivity encourages similar research other regions. An improved understanding model representation improve forecasts beyond daily time-scales enhance early warning systems.

Soil moisture memory and West African monsoon predictability: artefact or reality?

Besides sea surface temperature (SST), soil moisture (SM) exhibits a significant memory and is likely to contribute to atmospheric predictability at the seasonal timescale. In this respect, West Africa was recently highlighted as a “hot spot” where the land-atmosphere coupling could play an important role, through the recycling of precipitation and the modulation of the meridional gradient of m...

Examining the West African Monsoon circulation response to atmospheric heating in a GCM dynamical core

Diabatic heating plays a crucial role in the formation and maintenance of the West African Monsoon. A dynamical core configuration of a General Circulation Model (GCM) is used to test the influence of diabatic heating from different sources and regions on the strength and northward penetration of the monsoon circulation. The dynamical core is able to capture the main features of the monsoon flo...

The influence of regional feedbacks on circulation sensitivity

Weakening of the tropical overturning circulation in a warmer world is a robust feature in climate models. Here an idealized representation of ocean heat flux drives a Walker cell in an aquaplanet simulation. A goal of the study is to assess the influence of the Walker circulation on the magnitude and structure of climate feedbacks, as well as to global sensitivity. We compare two CO2 perturbat...
